So many kids - artists and hipsters alike - have already jumped on this bandwagon. But really it's been the sonorous expeditions of two Italian, hip-hop lovers (of all places and things!) that have largely reintroduced the cut-up, glitch style to the dominant "electro" form of house ...

and perhaps to a greater extent have made it their own.

Your Gramama couldn't possibly stuff a butterball nearly as fat as I have this power-hour of electroliciousness. And even if by the grace of some horrid genetically mutated man-bear-turkey she could ...

My way ensures all the tryp minus the tophan.

NOTES:

Cover Art & Full Tracklist included in the zip (hit the comments for a sneak peak).
Exactly an hour and two minutes (1:02:00) short, the official mix is comprised of 27 tracks - plus an additional bonus MYSTERY track - and consists of a medley of electro-house/pop/hop and rock.
Mixtapes generally feature fast transitioning and in this regard Oh! MY science is no different. However, by way of sustained blends, I've also managed to employ gradual, if not conventional, mix-in techniques while at the same time conserving the rate of [song] change. The [desired] effect is one that not only showcases more of particular songs' depth but also expresses a remixed sound.

The latter is most notably evidenced in the second half of the tape (I.E. the Flou to Fischerspooner blend-transition); while attention is explicitly given to the former [feverish, club-like style] in the first 30-odd minutes of the mix.

The title Oh! MY science is a tribute to Matt Stone & Trey Parker's pop-culture parody Southpark - namely season 10's two-part episode (151-152) Go God Go that satirizes the notion of secular religion; which is, in fact, a further allusion to Aldous Huxley's novel Brave New World where people honored Henry Ford, and said "Oh, Ford" instead of "Oh Lord."

JORDAN-Sized Electro ... Trance?

Jordan Stevens Resident DJ @ Las Vegas' Empire Ballroom; Myspace.

Dumb luck would have it that I run into this beast of a DJ at the Empire Ballroom in Vegas this week past [feel free to read more on the escapade below]*. Dude spun a mean electro set that not only figuratively but also literally knocked my socks off. And by socks I mean shirt cause halfway through the night I had my tee wrapped around my neck like it was 2000's Together As One all over again. We're talking about full on Nordic Track, Candy-Dance in effect ... and yes, that's raver-wild'n out to electro. Trust me - I was just as pleasantly surprised.

Put simply, Stevens' spins electro like one would trance. This may be no big thing for your average Euro Kielbasa, but not all of us have the golden-ticket luxury of a Eurail pass either; and unfortunately those spicy footlong's only come out here every so often. For myself then, and the rest of the stateside electro loyalists living in the [musical] minority, having a resident DJ adopt this style is huge, if not altogether unprecedented.

Admittedly, I'm not so sure if Stevens would be able to pull off the atypical hybrid style if the music itself wasn't there. Which introduces the other significant revelation of that fateful Vegas night: the specific breed of electro Stevens spins intrinsically carries extended break-downs and build-ups found in and particular to the trance genre; resulting in an especially progressive sounding electro.

There's really no other way to describe it; other than, in the same vein of analogy, having felt like a total newb. You see, it's my job to listen to hundreds of tracks a week; and in doing so I take it upon myself to find that next sound - that one producer that is simultaneously redefining the limits of his respective genre. Yet for as much diversity of electro as I've been listening to lately - disco/funk/house/rock/rap - I had not, hitherto, experienced anything quite like the trance-infused batch that Stevens was so nonchalantly spinning.

(How bout that, "the yin, the yang, the young" track? Apparently an old UK rave track redone ... ?)

Mixtapes tend to favor fast transitioning (as opposed to bolder, sustained mixing) for two primary reasons: By deliberately circumventing a track's [ultimate] deconstruction a DJ is able to A) maintain a desired set tempo/pace and avoid any repetition that might otherwise dull the listener he's trying so desperately to impress and B) fill up a time-contingent tape with a plethora of music. Club or house music is perfect for this; trance - a genre whose highs go only so far as its lows permit - however, is not. It may not be the best defense, but for what it's worth the latter explanation is to be taken as a disclaimer; for Stevens' mixtape does not accurately reflect his atypical style - of mixing one genre [electro] as if it were another [trance].

For that, he must be experienced live.

Nevertheless it is damn good; and the track selection, at the very least, hints to that which has been afore-discussed. If that weren't enough, the mixtape is a two-part, dual cd: the first half of which is electro and the second ... yea, you guessed it, trance.

Whoever says that there is no justice in the world clearly has not taken the time to look for it in Las Vegas.

Besides the simple (if not slightly exorbitant) fact that you can pretty much get whatever you want there, you can also be whoever you want - drunken, shirtless cretin notwithstanding.

Heck, if near limitless indulgence [consumption] isn't inspiration enough (in bringing out the innermost you) you can always satisfy the ego through the resurrection of another - try the King of rock and roll on for size: flashy clothes, killer chops, cocaine habit et al.

That's just beautiful ...

Oop! Yet a second virtue to be had in the city we so loathingly call Sin.

An impulsive decision to hop aboard a last minute Vegas trip is to blame for my two week [blogger] hiatus ...

And I wouldn't have it any other way. That is, the knee-jerk decision making (as opposed to an intarwebs absence); cause spontaneity is what Vegas is all about. Sure you can plan for the Cirque de Soleil or the Rio Buffet, but if you're really itching to drown yourself in that superlative excitement particular to ze capital city of sin, then you musts offer your entirety to her coquettish fate ...

and booze; lots and lots of booze.

So I rolled the dice and while I may have come up a few Benjamin's short of a 100, my senses, at the very least, made out like bandits.

The first of two [musically notable] happenstance experiences came last Saturday night at Vegas' own after(after!)hours extraordonaire: The Empire Ballroom. For the L.A. cats think Vanguard meets Avalon ... only you can keep boozin' until either your money runs out or your liver explodes.

Admittedly, I was initially skeptical of Empire - the free passes I had for the event were handed to me by an airbrush graffiti artist who makes ends meet by tagging up t-shirts along the Hollywood strip (to be fair, dude is a fellow essay from Echo Park and agreed to design me a T.T.S. logo!). Yet, what especially raised concerned was that A) I've been to (if not heard incessantly of) Studio 54, Tao, Pure and the rest of the typical Vegas nightclubs; Empire Ballroom on the other hand, just flat-out sounds like a "gentleman's club." And second or B) The club is located behind, get this, the Walgreens. Talk about prime real-estate. Not that the whole (pretentious) high-roller, up-scale club atmosphere is really my schtick; but a parking-lot lap-dance from toothless joe isn't exactly my idea of a stellar night either.

And then there were the conditions of the free pass: namely, "ticket is void if arriving in taxi-cab or limousine."

WTF.

So yeah, we had the Escalade stretch-limo drop us off across the street.

And by "Escalade stretch-limo" I mean Plymouth mini-van taxi-cab.

The skepticism extended itself well into the actual being in the club; and for a second came close on becoming utter disappointment. Every person in there was Greek or Persian or Arab or Indian, I honestly don't know which; but other than being pretty bad at distinguishing, last I checked I'm not exactly racist! either. So the self-conscious arousing crowd I had no problem with - rather it was the music. It, at the very least, sounded like it came from one of those aforementioned regions. Not all that bad really, but once again, not exactly my schtick.

Bored and on the brink of sobriety, I did what any man in a not-so-bumping club would do: I follow my girlfriend to the ladies room and play the loyal drink-holder as she takes her tinkle. Only that at this very moment the whole place decidedly turned up-side down, or really, right-side up.

Freakin' Yves La-FUCKIN-rock's Rise Up starts spilling out the speakers, Vandalism remix et al.

And that track my friends.

Prep the soap-on-the-rope, cause ya done son! Sound is straight FILTHY.

Considering the rather uneventful trajectory of the night, I wouldn't put it past you that just about any discernible song would've done the trick; but even if you've yet to hear what I'm talking about ...

Needless to say, the idea of missing out on what may very well have been the only coherent song of the night, was too much to bear. I momentarily forgot about Trace - and the fact that her drink belonged anywhere other than inside my gut - and proceeded to traverse past half the Middle East and into the thin Gaza Strip of dancefloor that was still available.

The DJ who laid down the Larock track was absolute balls - as in hairy, sweaty, and just all-around bad. Even so, had the night ended at that I woulda been content with having had the opportunity to sweat it out to at least one good track. As it turned out, dude had a copy of Ministry of Sound 2k8 on hand, and, well ... shit mixing or naught, hits are hits.

Even if the first and last ten seconds of each track are brutally severed.

Reinvigorated by the uplifting, soulful energy that only house music can provide, I was really beginning to buy into the notion that Empire really wasn't all that bad.

What would ensue shortly thereafter would go on to fully lay all doubt to rest (not too mention rock my socks off).

Turntable Terrorist by the name of Jordan Stevens comes out and absolutely murders the dancefloor ....

These guy's might as well be named B A N A N A S cause their work just makes you wanna go apeshit.

Seriously, children, it is in the (humble) opinion of this international deejay superstar extraordinaire, that the secret recipe the Chewy Chocolate Cookies so delicately follow, yields some of thee most delicious melodies these here overly gluttonous pair of ears have ever chewed on.

The term "avant-garde" comes to mind; but CCC isn't so much radical as they are superlatively progressive. They take whatever conceptions you may have of electro-bangers and absolutely floor them (in a "I just took the hardest hit of 'E' and I'm spending the rest of my night tripping out to light shows up in the bleachers" kind of way).

As per CCC's request, I'm not actually posting their just-out-the-oven remix here. As well as ostensibly lifting it from underground counter-culture scenes into pop (counter-culture) trend.

I was that close to making it to all four of MSTRKRFT's L.A. appearances. But a little thing called "work" blueballed me from the first show (@ the Fonda) the 29th.

Well ... I guess a hat trick ain't too bad.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't see Sunday's [post El Rey] LAX afterparty a mile away; but Tuesday night's (Cinespace) encore was double-barreled and altogether electrofying. Especially seeing as how the Dim Mak crew had these clowns lined up for the guest DJ spot.

(My respects to the guy in the middle - I don't know you but you should choose better celebrity accessories for your "look-at-me-I'm-vicariously-famous" pictures).

BTW: fuck boylover 'b' for telling my homie Shahin he doesn't smoke; then proceeding to suck a fag for cobrasnake press.

(If I'm not making sense - for those of you in the know - Lo Fi cut their UCLA show prematurely only to get [collectively] stiff armed at the DJ booth later that night).

Speaking of which, the man is an absolute turntable terrorist. If I had to choose between the three [appearances], Tuesday's takes the coveted T.S.S. Golden Vinyl Donut (sorry, I haven't actually gotten around to designing the "award," zing!).

I'm not the biggest Aoki fan, but I respect the man for having the tenacity to bring some of the indisputably hottest (electro) DJ's under one roof.

Not clear enough? How's this for envy:

NAME-THAT-DJ!

I'd say the highlight of it all was watching the "Spin-Off" between Aoki and Lazaro. To the untrained eye [ear], it might have appeared otherwise; but there was definitely a competitive edge throughout the tag-team effort (at one point - I believe it was after Lazaro threw down a heavier remix of We Are Rockstars [a track Aoki had just previously entertained] - that the Benihana heir finally conceded; fully handing over table duties [pleasures] to the krft mstr.

I hear that this past weekend's show at Studio B in Brooklyn was just as good (if not better, seeing as how the Bloody Bees were also in the mix). Apparently half-way through the set A-Trak, P-Thugg and Armand Van Helden - the godfather of house himself - showed up on stage.

As the Chemical Bros Salmon Dance goes...

"WOW!"

Serious creamage.

It appears that somewhere along the line of the Englishman's/DJ/Producer's artistic trajectory, he ended up being taken under the wing of the Ed Banger crew where he became the executive producer of ... get this ... a little Justice single called "D.A.N.C.E." In turn Xavier De Rosnay helped produce Disco Sirens. And while you're there make sure to listen to the D.I.M. remix of said track - as it is more to the personal liking of this here blogmaster.

In early 2007, their original team-up work on The Mistakes EP proved to shatter more hearts than ear drums, as the short but insatiably sweet collaboration left the electro community crying, "Mehrrr!"

Exactly one year later, the dynamic duo have answered the call with a new record release entitled Word and Ghost - after its two respective tracks.

I already gave you a taste of the big-bassy, rollercoaster (Leger) synths of Word in last post's remix; so now soak in the sun-drenched, summery house sounds of the more Lake-esque Ghost:

Note: There's been some criticism over the "unusual" synth choice of the aforesaid track; namely that it is trance-esque. It is in the opinion of this International Superstar Deejay/Blogger that it is exactly that atypical sound that wholly makes Ghost extraordinary and Sebastien Leger and Chris Lake so damn progressive. Get this: Trance (influenced), Electro-Tech, Acid House ... and I guess some U.S. indie-rocker chick in a leotard on vox wouldn't hurt either. Ugggh, now there's a vinyl donut to drool over.

There is much ado about electro these days and it has all big banged out of the bold "new rock" association. It might come as no surprise then that a DJ duo with the name Alter Ego A.K.A Transphormer, is among those spearheading the r[evolution].

Influenced by the likes of Television, The Velvet Underground, The Ramones, Kraftwerk, NEU! and Primal Scream, these German bred homies out of Darmstadt grew up with a taste for all things punk and new wave rock and roll. So you'd best believe they've managed to capture that head-banging, arm-flailing, grimy-sweet retro sound and compact it into 3 minutes of tech-acid house.

High profile remixes for Daft Punk, Josh Winks and The Freeform Five have garnered the duo worldwide attention. But overall, Alter Ego remains relatively unknown in the U.S. due to lack of tours and [English] media promotion - indeed, the majority of existing biographical content is in German [nein!].

A recently released CD entitled Why Not?! (after its single) may just remedy the stateside effort; but not before you go out and check it!

As per request, here is Part I of the Face Off! set I put together for Binh's this past weekend; it's just a little over an hour and just shy [in length] of Part II:

As mentioned elsewhere, the set or specifically, the first half of it, was my first [live] recording endeavor with Traktor - consequently yielding an amateur, and overall unsatisfying, sound. I was able to correct most of the major problems the second time around (with Part II) but, admittedly, I played it rather safe and employed gradual, if not conventional, mixing techniques - resulting in a rather lethargic experience, imho.

I'm not entirely sure whether or not I'll be sticking with Traktor for future recordings, but as it stands my mixer bleeds more than a 13 year old girl and this bad boy remains well out of my [financial] means. So unless otherwise noted, you can safely assume all current work has been completed with said program.

In the meantime - midi controllers and ext. soundcard [absence] still withstanding - I've applied the technical maturity I've hitherto garnered and re-recorded Part I. The mix-ins are more forward (than Part II's) yet tighter. Thus, at times, sounding mashed-up; but transitioning at a much more smoother pace.
